Officials say 3 million gallons of partially treated sewage has spewed into Lake Champlain.

The city of Burlington says the wastewater was released into the lake around midnight Wednesday. It is warning residents to stay away from Blanchard Beach, Blodgett Area Beach, the Coast Guard Boat Launch and Perkins Pier.

The director of Burlington Public Works says the spill was caused by a computer malfunction at the city's main wastewater treatment plant during heavy storms Tuesday night.

Officials say an employee had to come to the plant and fix the issue manually.

The city has tested waters for E. coli, and test results are expected Thursday.

Mayor Miro Weinberger says he supports using every resource to prevent the failure from happening again.
