Castleton University in Vermont has announced staff layoffs as part of an effort to close a $1.5 million operating loss.
University officials cited "enrollment realities" when announcing that it has cut 10 positions.

University Dean of Advancement Jeff Weld says most of the staff were support positions and the layoffs were designed to minimize student impact.

The Rutland Herald reports university officials say they are looking at adding new programs and expanding outreach to attract new students. Some of the programs include a master's degree in nursing and an undergraduate degree in computer science.

Weld says they expect an increase of 80 to 100 students in the upcoming academic year.

The university has about 450 employees, including part-time staff.
