The Massachusetts Department of Transportation has scheduled a public hearing Friday afternoon in Springfield on the agency’s proposed state rail plan.

MassDOT officials will discuss the draft 2018 State Rail Plan and solicit public comment from 3:00 p.m – 4:30 p.m. at the office of the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission.

The plan proposes a feasibility study of passenger rail between Springfield and Boston, a project State Senator Eric Lesser has advocated as vital to the economic future of western Massachusetts.

"There is now a multi-week process of public engagement," Lesser explained. " This is an appeal to the public to participate in this and let your voice be heard."

For those who cannot show up in person at the public hearing, MassDOT is taking written comments until Feb. 19th.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
