Woman Charged With Wounding Gun Instructor Ready For Trial

A Vermont woman initially ruled incompetent to stand trial on charges of wounding her firearms instructor almost three years ago is now headed to trial.
The ruling in the case of Veronica Lewis came during a hearing in Vermont Superior Court in Burlington.

Last year, a judge ruled Lewis did not have the ability to consult with her lawyer "with a reasonable degree of rational understanding."

Lewis' attorney did not respond Friday to a request for comment.

WCAX-TV reports Lewis has pleaded not guilty to attempted first-degree murder in the 2015 shooting of Darryl Montague at his Westford home, where he runs a firearms business and she had a lesson. Montague survived being shot multiple times.

A prosecutor says she expects Lewis to remain hospitalized until a spring trial.
