Extra Shelter Opens For Cold; Rules Waived For Oil Drivers

A Vermont Department for Children and Families official says there's concern there won't be enough motel rooms available for the homeless during the current cold snap.
DCF Deputy Commissioner Sean Brown says a voucher program that helps the homeless when existing shelters reach capacity during periods of extreme cold is being stretched thin because the cold is coming during the holiday week and there aren't as many rooms available. He says an extra shelter may have to be opened in the Burlington area.

Meanwhile in Rutland an extra shelter for the homeless has been opened at the Elks Club.

Vermont has also issued an emergency declaration that will allow it to temporarily suspend a federal rule limiting the number of hours truck drivers can spend delivering heating oil and other fuel.
