Democratic Senator  Patrick Leahy is decrying proposed federal cuts to heating and weatherization programs for the poor.
Senator Leahy and leaders of Vermont programs that direct federal funds to the needy said Monday that proposed federal budget cuts by President Donald Trump would eliminate federal LIHEAP funding.

Leahy, the vice chair of the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee,  does not foresee the committee accepting severe cuts to a program that provides heating assistance to poor households.  “I would hope that nobody on the Senate Appropriations Committee would vote for this kind of a budget.”.

More than 21,000 Vermont families used the LIHEAP program last year
