Democratic U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy says he will oppose the nomination of Senator Jeff Sessions to be the next U.S. Attorney General.
Leahy, a former chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said Monday that he has serious doubts that Sessions would be an independent attorney general.
Leahy says the attorney general must faithfully serve all Americans and after carefully reviewing Sessions' extensive record, he says he is not convinced that Session meets that threshold standard.
Last week, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee forced a one-week delay until Tuesday for the committee's vote on Sessions.
Leahy says now, more than ever, the country need an independent attorney general who is committed to standing up for the constitutional and statutory rights of the disenfranchised.
