Thousands of volunteers will fan out in four New England states Friday and Saturday for an organized trash cleanup along the banks of the Connecticut River.
This is the 20th annual Source to Sea Cleanup organized by the Connecticut River Watershed Council. Each year volunteers collect tons of trash and debris from boat launches, trails, and parks by the river and its tributaries.
The council’s executive director Andrew Fisk said this year the haul could be bigger because the drought has left the river level low.
" That is going to expose a lot of old bicycles, shopping carts, tires or tarps that ordinarily might be in water too deep to work," said Fisk.
Contractors will use cranes and other heavy equipment to remove large objects that been spotted in the river.
