Statistics released by Governor Dannel Malloy’s administration show that Connecticut has decreased its number of prison inmates aged 18 to 21 years old by 54 percent over the last seven years.The Connecticut Post reports Malloy said the figures are a "positive sign" that crime will continue to decline in the state over the coming years.
Connecticut currently has 899 inmates that fall in that age group, down from a total of 2,067 prisoners in July 2009.
Malloy said the decrease can be largely attributed to the raising of the age of juvenile offenders to 18, which became law in July 2012. He also said the institution of more school-based diversionary programs helped as well.
Because of the recent success, Malloy said he wants to expand criminal justice reforms further.
