Republican Gov. Charlie Baker has vetoed $256 million in spending from a nearly $39 billion state budget for the fiscal year that began July 1.

Baker on Friday signed into law the remainder of the spending plan that was hammered out by House and Senate negotiators who grappled with new forecasts that point to lower-than-expected tax revenue in the coming months.

The governor calls the budget fiscally responsible with increases in local aid, education and opioid abuse prevention. He says it will not raise taxes or draw down the state's reserves.

In addition to the $256 million in vetoes, the administration says it has identified more than $150 million in additional savings.

The Democratic-controlled Legislature could choose to override some or all of the vetoes.
