Northern New England Won't See Record Cold

WikiMedia Commons

Northern New England is braced for bitter cold but not looking at setting any records, according to the National Weather Service in Gray, Maine.

Meteorologist Bob Marine says Friday night was the first time Portland, Maine, got below zero degrees, adding that is "very unusual."

He said people have been spoiled by unseasonably higher temperatures "and now they have to deal with reality."

Marine said the record for cold in Concord, New Hampshire, on Valentine's Day is -28 degrees, and the forecast is for a low of -10.

The National Weather Service does not factor wind chill into its temperature records, Marine said, adding it could be "dangerous out there" overnight Saturday into Sunday.

The NWS in Vermont says a wind chill warning is in effect until 7 p.m. Sunday.
