Trial Delayed For Accused Vermont Lawmaker

A trial on criminal sex charges for suspended Vermont state Sen. Norm McAllister has been put off until at least May.

That's expected to relieve the threat that any lawmakers called as witnesses would be pulled away from their legislative duties, since it's likely the Legislature will have adjourned for the year by the time the trial gets under way.

McAllister, a Franklin County Republican, was arrested May 7 outside the Statehouse and arraigned the next day on three counts of felony sexual assault and three counts of misdemeanor prohibited acts. He denies the charges, and his lawyer, Brooks McArthur, outlined a defense theory of the case on Friday, saying there were no sexual assaults.
