A western Massachusetts police chief who wasn't arrested even though he appeared drunk during a traffic stop has resigned.
Belchertown's Board of Selectman accepted Chief Francis Fox Jr.'s resignation on Monday.
The resignation includes no admission of wrongdoing.
Fox had been placed on administrative leave two weeks ago after it was disclosed that he had been pulled over for driving erratically in the neighboring town of Granby last February after attending a Super Bowl party. Even though he appeared drunk to the officer who pulled him over, he was not arrested or even cited, and was driven home by a Granby officer.
Fox has worked for the town's police department for nearly 30 years, the last 13 as chief.
Sgt. Bruce Jenks will continue to serve as acting chief.
