Vermont DCF Worker Killed Outside Office Building

Vermont state officials say a mother who was upset about losing custody of her child has fatally shot a Department for Children and Families worker.

Gov. Peter Shumlin says the shooting happened Friday outside a state office building in Barre. He says "the initial reports are horrific" and break his heart. Officials say the female worker had just left a DCF office when she was shot.

Police Chief Tim Bombardier tells the Burlington Free Press a suspect has been taken into custody.

Shumlin says the worker's death is "shocking and heartbreaking." Mayor Thom Lauzon says it's "a tragedy for Vermont."

Department for Children and Families staff members have been directed to go out this weekend only on emergency calls and accompanied by law enforcement.
