A Vermont State College committee has given preliminary approval to a proposal to change the name of Castleton State College to Castleton University.

The resolution — approved Thursday by the Vermont State College Long Term Planning Committee — will go before the state college's Board of Trustees next week.

Castleton State College has added five graduate programs in the past five years and hopes the change to Castleton University will reflect that and help attract more out-of-state and foreign students. The non-Vermont students pay more in out-of-state tuition rates and could help offset budget concerns.

The Rutland Herald reports that Castleton will host 12 Chinese teachers this fall and it has agreements with more than 10 schools in China that will allow Castleton to be represented at their college fairs.
