Off-Duty Vermont Police Officer Charged With Drunken Driving

An off-duty Burlington police officer has been charged with drunken driving after a head-on crash.

St. Albans police said Monday that a 2012 Ford Escape driven by 30-year-old Leanne Werner crossed the center line about 5:15 Sunday afternoon and hit a 2009 Kia Sedona driven by 74-year-old Omer Martin of
St. Albans.

Omer Martin was hospitalized in serious but stable condition Monday. His wife, 73-year-old Jane Martin, was treated for a broken hand and released.

Werner, who had minor injuries, has been a Burlington police officer since 2011. She was charged with driving under the influence and grossly negligent operation of a motor vehicle.

Werner, of St. Albans, was placed on administrative leave. It could not immediately be learned if she had a lawyer.
