A new police chief should be on the job in Northampton, Massachusetts by July 1st.
The Northampton City Council has scheduled a special meeting for Monday night to vote on the appointment of Jody Kasper to be the city’s next police chief.
Kasper, a 19-year veteran of the force and currently Captain of Operations, would be the city’s first female chief of police.
City Council President Bill Dwight said a simple majority vote by the nine-member council is required to confirm the appointment.
" It would probably behoove everybody if there was a unanimous vote and I think that is very likely," he said.
An official swearing-in ceremony for Kasper has been scheduled for Tuesday evening.
Current police chief Russell Sienkiewicz is retiring.
