A renowned climate researcher at UMass Amherst is praising Pope Francis’ encyclical on climate change.
Raymond Bradley, director of the Climate System Research Center at UMass Amherst, said he is very happy with the Pope’s message that addresses global warming and the related environmental problems as a moral and ethical issue.
"He is a humble person and obviously has great concern for the poor, so I think he has done the right thing here and I think it will have an impact," he said.
Bradley said the Pope’s encyclical is in line with the current scientific thinking on climate change. The Pope said global warming is proceeding, driven by human activity, and the consequences will be acutely felt by the poor.
