Officials Monday will announce a summer reading program for children in the second largest school system in Massachusetts.
The mayor of Springfield and the superintendent of schools will announce a summer reading club.
Children need to read during the summer so they don’t lose skills when they return to school in the fall and can keep up with their grade level, according to Ralph Smith of the Annie Casey Foundation.
" Getting more kids to have a summer gain, rather than a summer learning loss, does a lot to help kids read by the end of third grade," he said.
The Springfield summer reading club will offer incentives including tickets for Boston Bruins games, and field trips to the Forest Park Zoo.
