Vermont State Police say state Sen. Norman McAllister has been arrested and will face charges of sexual assault, human trafficking and prohibited acts.
Police say in a statement that McAllister was arrested Thursday on charges stemming from an investigation into complaints made against him.
The 63-year-old Highgate resident, a Republican in his second two-year Senate term, is scheduled to be arraigned Friday morning in the criminal district court for Franklin County. He was ordered jailed on $20,000 bail.
State Police say the case was investigated by the Northwest Unit For Special Investigations, a law enforcement team that investigates sex crimes. No further details were immediately released.
McAllister had spent the day at the Statehouse on Thursday before his arrest.
