The Vermont Senate has passed and sent on to the House a bill to allow people to register on Election Day, and then vote.

Current Vermont law requires voters to register by the Wednesday before an election.

The Senate's voice vote in support came after it rejected an amendment offered by Franklin County Republican Sen. Dustin Degree that would have required Election Day registrants to show ID.

The bill is winning praise from Vermont Secretary of State Jim Condos, who says it will encourage voter participation in elections.
