State Employee Took Personal Information From Database

Wikimedia/Public Domain

The Vermont Department of Labor says an employee took private information from the department's unemployment insurance program database.

The state says so far, 39 individuals' names and Social Security numbers, and 41 Social Security numbers not associated with names, were taken by the now former employee in copies and electronic files.

Vermont State Police searched the employee's home and seized copies of documents and personal computer devices that will be reviewed.

The Labor Department says it believes the risk of identity theft arising from the incident is minimal.

All affected people and employers identified in the investigation will get a written notice from the Labor Department notifying them that their personal information was improperly accessed.

The state police investigation is continuing.
