GOP Leaders Call For Federal Probe Of Health Care Money

WAMC/Pat Bradley

Republican leaders in the Vermont Legislature are calling for a federal investigation of the state's spending on its health overhaul, including Vermont's contract with health economist Jonathan Gruber.

They're asking the inspector general of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to review all federal dollars spent by Governor Peter Shumlin's administration following passage of the Affordable Care Act.

The call by Senate Minority Leader Joe Benning and House Minority Leader Don Turner on Tuesday followed a state auditor's report saying Gruber may have padded bills to the state for his work in helping to develop the now abandoned plan for a universal, publicly funded health care system for Vermont.

Gruber made headlines after saying passage of the federal Affordable Care Act was helped by a lack of transparency.
