Vermont State Auditor Urges Better Informed Medical Shoppers

401(K) 2013/Creative Commons

Vermont's state auditor is asking lawmakers to beef up the information consumers have when they decide where to have a medical procedure done.

Auditor of Accounts Doug Hoffer says the state already has a health database that collects the necessary information, and a law in place saying it should be available to consumers.

He told the House Health Care Committee on Friday that the state is coming up short on providing consumer information and has fallen behind neighboring states.

State Rep. George Till — an obstetrician-gynecologist at the University of Vermont Medical Center, says it sounds like a good idea, but needs to be approached with caution. He says academic medical centers like UVM are more expensive than community hospitals, and handle tougher cases.
