Smith College Economist Says Hosting Olympics Is Economic Gamble

The U.S. Olympic Committee last week picked Boston to make the American bid to host the 2024 Summer Olympics.  Backers say the games will enhance Boston’s image as a world-class city. Opponents fear a costly boondoggle.  Smith College economics professor Andrew Zimbalist has researched the costs in his new book “Circus Maximus: The Economic Gamble Behind Hosting the Olympics and the World Cup.”  He spoke with WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
