Conversation With Vermont Speaker On New Legislative Session

Vermont Legislature

The Vermont legislative session began a new biennium Wednesday as new House and Senate are sworn in.  Democrat Shap Smith was re-elected Speaker of the House.  North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley spoke with Smith as he prepared for the upcoming session.

Democrat Shap Smith has been a member fo the Vermont House since 2002 and has held the Speaker’s position since 2009. He says the focus of this session will be the pocketbook issues that legislators heard about during their campaigns.

The session began with the ceremonial roll call of those who have been elected. They then chose the Speaker of the House and the clerk before starting legislative business.
