Former Governor to Lead Student Loan Group's 50th

Former Vermont Governor Phil Hoff will serve as the honorary chairman of the Vermont Student Assistance Corporation's 50th Anniversary Council, which is going to be holding events across the state this year to talk about college access and affordability.

VSAC is a public, nonprofit group that helps Vermont students obtain education loans, grants and scholarships.

It  was created by the Legislature during Hoff's tenure as governor in 1965 to help Vermonters plan and pay for college.

VSAC President Scott Giles says Hoff's leadership made higher education a life-changing opportunity for Vermonters.

Other members of the 50th Anniversary Council include Senator Patrick Leahy, U.S. Representative Peter Welch, Governor Peter Shumlin and former Governor Jim Douglas.

Since 1966 VSAC has given out $500 million in grants and $84 million scholarships.
