A funeral will be held Monday for retired Springfield Bishop Joseph Maguire.

The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. at Saint Michael’s Cathedral –the mother church of the Springfield Diocese.  Bishop Mitchell Rozanski said the service will be a fitting tribute to the beloved spiritual leader who was known as the “people’s bishop.”

" We will follow Bishop Maguire's  plans for those funeral services," said Rozanski

A spokesman for the diocese said there will be ample seating inside the cathedral and there will be an overflow viewing area.  A tribute page has been created on Facebook for  people to share memories about Maguire who was bishop from 1977 through 1991.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
