A non-profit group that helps provide affordable rental properties in southwestern Vermont has been awarded a $316,000 state grant to help pay for a $3 million renovation project.

Shires Housing Executive Director John Broderick says the group hopes to rehabilitate 26 of its apartments, all in Bennington. The apartments are located in six buildings.

The state money is a grant from the Vermont Housing and Conservation Board.

Broderick tells the Bennington Banner the renovation work consists mainly of interior work designed to increase energy efficiency. It's hoped the renovations will save 25 percent on heating costs.
