Conservationists Unlikely To Buy Lakefront Land

Vermont land conservation groups say it's unlikely any way will be found to buy 25 acres of undeveloped land on Lake Champlain in Burlington before a deal for the property with a developer becomes final.

Burlington College is hoping to sell the land that is now part of its North Avenue property as a way to help it dig out of a deep financial hole.

The college has made a deal to sell the land to a developer for $7 million, but they included a provision to sell the land to a conservation group if it can outbid the developer within 60 days.

Jon Binhammer of The Nature Conservancy tells Vermont Public Radio that for $7 million a group could purchase about 7,000 acres of high-quality forest land.
