A private psychiatric hospital that houses patients for the state of Vermont must fix problems by Nov. 5 or risk losing federal funding.

A three-day inspection that ended Oct. 1 found significant problems that prompted the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to threaten the funding cutoff.  The memo was shared by the Brattleboro Retreat with the Vermont Department of Mental Health.

One immediate change was the removal from the hospital of a type of bandage after a patient was seen wrapping the bandage around his or her neck.

A second incident occurred when a patient was allowed to bathe while a staff member waited outside the room and the patient attempted self-harm by lowering her or his head under water.
