The Vermont Health Department says tests have detected West Nile virus in the state for the first time this season.

The virus was found in mosquitoes collected from a pool in St. Albans on July 29.

Last year, 28 of 1,328 mosquito pools tested positive for West Nile Virus. One human case of West Nile was reported in Vermont last year, a patient in Lamoille County who recovered.

State epidemiologist Patsy Kelso says if West Nile is being found, it's likely that Eastern Equine Encephalitis is in the state as well.

Kelso says people should take precautions and avoid mosquito bites.

Symptoms of West Nile are often mild, but can include high fever. In rare cases it can be fatal.
