The Vermont attorney general has asked the federal court to throw out a lawsuit filed by the Grocery Manufacturers Association and other industry groups over a Vermont law that requires the labeling of food made with genetically modified organisms.

Attorney General Bill Sorrell said in the court filing on Friday that Vermont's labeling law withstands all five challenges to its constitutionality made by the plaintiffs.

The federal lawsuit, filed in June in Burlington, wants the labeling law overturned and describes it as "a misguided measure that will set the nation on a path toward a 50-state patchwork of GMO labeling policies." The lawsuit claims that food made with GMOs is safe and says the Vermont law exceeds the state's authority under the U.S. Constitution.
