Barre Gets $1.6 Million In Grants

Governor Peter Shumlin says the city of Barre is receiving $1.6 million in grants to address flood risks, clean up environmental contamination and redevelop a central part of downtown.

The city is getting $1 million from the Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery fund and $600,000 in brownfields grants from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Barre Mayor Tom Lauzon said Thursday that the funding will allow the city to clean up and improve an area known as Enterprise Aly, creating parking and more economic activity downtown. The money will be used to improve the storm drainage system and change elevations to direct flood water away from buildings and to clean up a hazardous area that was contaminated by a former dry cleaning business.
