MGM Set To Buy Two Springfield Properties For Casino Project

MGM Springfield

MGM is preparing to purchase two city-owned buildings in Springfield for the Las Vegas-based company’s casino project.

Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno said MGM intends to close on the sale of the properties by the end of this month despite the statewide casino referendum in November that could kill the Springfield project.

" They have honored everything they have had to honor up to this point."

The city council will act Monday on Sarno’s recommendation to sell a former National Guard armory and a former school to MGM for $3.2 million. Both buildings were heavily damaged by the 2011 tornado. MGM was the high bidder for the properties.  The casino construction plans call for the façade of the armory to be preserved, and the school to be demolished.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
