RMV Fee Increases Effective July 1

Fees are increasing effective July 1 at the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles.

The fee for a two-year car registration in Massachusetts goes up $10 to $60.  Annual safety and emission inspections will cost $35, a $6 increase.  A road test for a driver’s license will cost $35, an increase of $15.  MassDOT spokesman Michael Verseckes said the increases are the result of the transportation finance law approved by the legislature last year that requires MassDOT to generate more revenue.

"The RMV fees provide the most flexibility and latitude. We are looking at toll increases and fare increases as well. It is a way to more evenly distribute the increase in resources."

The RMV fee increases are projected to bring in between $53 million and $63 million.
