Vermont Sues Over Use Of MTBE

The Vermont Attorney General's office is suing more than two dozen of the country's largest refiners of gasoline over the use of the gasoline additive MTBE that it says has caused widespread groundwater pollution.

Attorney General William Sorrell says his office believes that these companies ignored the risks of MTBE and sold it anyway.

Sorrell's office says MTBE is now banned as a gasoline additive in Vermont but the state is still overseeing remediation of past MTBE-releases and continues to find contaminated wells.

He says the companies that profited from selling MTBE should be held responsible for the groundwater pollution.
