Vermont Adds 3 Counties To Flood Disaster List

The state of Vermont is asking the Federal Emergency Management Agency to include three more counties when considering a request for disaster assistance from spring flooding.

On Monday, Governor Peter Shumlin and state Homeland Security Director Joe Flynn said they were adding Franklin, Orleans and Washington counties to a request for damage assessment.

They had already asked for assessments for Caledonia, Essex, Lamoille, and Orange counties.

The damage came after heavy rains that started on April 15. Flooding damaged roads and other infrastructure.

The state estimates the damage will total more than $1 million, the threshold for federal aid.

FEMA personnel will be in Vermont starting Tuesday to verify damage and determine which counties would qualify for a disaster declaration.
