Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin says his 88-year-old father has died.

In a statement issued by his office, Shumlin says his father, George Shumlin, died at his Westminster West home Thursday surrounded by his children and his wife.

The cause of death was not released.

George Shumlin and his wife settled in Vermont in 1955. George Shumlin worked as an actor, a stage manager and director in regional and summer theaters, on Broadway and in network television. Later in life, he taught at the Putney School and Arizona's Verde Valley School.

Shumlin and his wife founded Putney Student Travel.

He is survived by Kitty, his wife of 62 years, three children and five grandchildren.

Governor Shumlin says a private celebration of his father's life will be held at a later date.
