VT House Budget Writers Enter Home Stretch

WAMC/Pat Bradley

The Vermont House Appropriations Committee is in the final days of drafting a budget for the fiscal year that starts July 1, with items ranging from a 2 percent increase for higher education to $100,000 for a needle-exchange program hanging in the balance.

Members of the House committee say they'll be making decisions on funding for many of the individual programs still on a "maybe list" by the end of this week. And they expect the full House to vote on a general fund budget for fiscal 2015 by the end of next week.

Many of the items still to be determined would be cuts or increases to larger funding streams. Child care subsidies are one example. Two percent increases for the Vermont Symphony and Arts Council also are pending.
