House Panel Presses Administration On School Taxes

WAMC/Pat Bradley

Members of the tax-writing committee in the Vermont House are expressing frustration with the administration of Governor Peter Shumlin over school property taxes.

Shumlin earlier this week vowed to lessen what earlier had been projected as a 7-cent increase in the statewide residential school property tax rate.

But when members of the Ways and Means Committee asked Tax Commissioner Mary Peterson on Friday what the governor's ideas were, she did not provide definitive answers.

She said she appreciated the committee's work, but suggested its proposals would be changed at least somewhat as they move through the Senate and a legislative conference committee.

Committee Chairwoman Janet Ancel replied that the panel is trying to draft the best bill it can, and would like the administration's suggestions now.
