Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick has appointed a new Secretary of Labor and Workforce Development.

Rachel Kaprielian, the current registrar of motor vehicles, will replace Joanne Goldstein who is leaving the governor’s cabinet for an administration job a Northeastern  University.  Patrick in a statement praised Goldstein for her four years of dedication and commitment to workers, employers and job seekers.  Goldstein had been under fire for the rollout of a new $46 million computer system that left many unable to get unemployment benefits when it went into operation on July 1st, according to Chris Horton, a Worcester-based advocate for the unemployed.

"Tens of thousands of people are being negatively affected by this."

Patrick said Goldstein’s departure had nothing to do with the troubled computer system.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
