Hearing Set On Proposed Mass. 'Virtual School'

The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is holding a public hearing on this year's only application to open a virtual school in the state.

The department received six letters of intent from potential applicants for new virtual schools for the 2014-15 school year, but only one group submitted a final application by the Nov. 4 deadline.

The proposed Massachusetts Connections Academy of Learning Excellence would serve kindergarten through high school students, with an initial enrollment of up 1,500 students. That could rise to 6,000 by its fifth year.

A 2012 law allows for up to three virtual schools by 2016.

One virtual school, the Massachusetts Virtual Academy at Greenfield Commonwealth Virtual School, is currently operating.

The hearing is at 3 p.m. Monday at the department's headquarters in Malden.
