Known for its commitment to local foods and its artisan cheeses, maple syrup and even beer, Vermont now hopes to become a national hub for food systems education.

On Thursday, the presidents of the University of Vermont, Vermont Law School, Sterling College and the Vermont State Colleges signed a memorandum of understanding to create the Vermont Higher Education Food Systems Consortium.

The institutions plan to share courses in agriculture and food so that students enrolled at one school can take a course, do research or get an internship at another college.

Participating schools will also look into semester- or year-long student exchanges with other institutions and work to link degree programs so students can continue their education in Vermont.
