VT Panel: No Decision on Nuke Decommissioning

A Vermont state panel that oversees the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant has put off a decision on whether it wants to urge a quick decommissioning for the plant, which is due to close late next year.

The Rutland Herald reports that the Vermont State Nuclear Advisory Panel failed to muster enough votes to pass a motion on the issue, after two members abstained and one voted no.

At issue is plant owner Entergy Corp.'s announced intention to delay dismantling the Vernon reactor for up to 60 years to allow radioactive components to cool and a special decommissioning fund to grow.

Governor Peter Shumlin has said he would like to see the plant removed and the site restored as quickly as possible.
