VT City Says Big Step Toward Champlain Parkway

WAMC/Pat Bradley

The mayor of Vermont's largest city says the construction of the Champlain Parkway highway project that would connect the south end of Burlington with Interstate 189 is a big step closer to happening.

Mayor Miro Weinberger said Monday the city had settled an appeal of an Act 250 land-use permit for the project filed with the state environmental court by the Vermont Railway.

Appeals from three other parties remain pending.

The Champlain Parkway is designed to reroute truck traffic from Burlington's South End to the Pine Street corridor and downtown. It has been in the works for nearly half a century.

Among the details of the settlement are that the Vermont Transportation Agency will be responsible if an Englesby Brook culvert fails or needs maintenance under the railroad line.
