Vermont Utility to Make Rutland Efficiency Example

Green Mountain Power

Vermont's largest electric utility wants to turn the city of Rutland into a national example of energy efficiency while helping the community revitalize itself.

Officials with Green Mountain Power announced Wednesday that they hope to create a city-wide laboratory focused on the rapid development of renewable energy technology.

GMP President Mary Powell says Rutland will become the regional leader in reliance on, and development of, technologies that will demonstrate the economic value of renewable energy.

Mayor Christopher Louras says the project will be part of a wider plan to help revitalize the city. He says it will bring intellectual capital to the city and create energy projects that could make a difference, not just to the state, but to the nation.
