Trash Dumped on Roads after Vermont Landfill Closes

Central Vermont's Moretown Landfill has closed, but there's been some illegal dumping on several town roads.

Vermont Public Radio reports town Road Foreman Martin Cameron told the select board that mattresses, bags of garbage, tires, and other items have been found.

The board also heard that people have been seen using school dumpsters to dump trash. The town has started locking the dumpsters and is investigating roadside dumping enforcement options.

The landfill was one of only two in Vermont when it was closed by the state at the end of March because of environmental concerns and odor complaints.

The landfill reopened for local customers only in April, but closed again July 15. Its owners have indicated they plan to apply for a permit to open a new section.
