Hartford, Connecticut Mayor Pedro Segarra's former chief of staff will serve probation after his July arrest on charges that he used a city SUV without permission after leaving office.
WVIT-TV reports that Jared Kupiec was put in an accelerated rehabilitation program Thursday, allowing him to avoid a criminal record if he finishes his supervision term without problems.
The program is aimed at giving people charged with a crime for the first time a second chance.
Kupiec will have to do 100 hours of community service, pay back about $2,600, and be supervised for a year.
Police were investigating smashed vehicle windows when they found that one of the vehicles was a city vehicle and parked by Kupiec's apartment.
The 30-year-old resigned in June after criticism about city credit card use.
