Springfield Seeking Strong Casino Voter Turnout

WAMC

Massachusetts Springfield Election Commissioner Gladys Oyola says she's optimistic that voter turnout could approach 25 percent Tuesday when Springfield voters decide on a casino project proposed by MGM Resorts International.

The Republican reports that groups lobbying for and against the casino plan are working to get out the vote with mailings, telephone calls and door knocking.

If voters approve the proposed $800 million casino project, it moves to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission for consideration. The state commission will consider approving up to three casino projects in Massachusetts including one in western Massachusetts.

Casinos are also being proposed by Mohegan Sun in Palmer and by Hard Rock International in West Springfield. The state also will consider a slots parlor.

There has already been strong advance voting in absentee ballots.
